Biography
Dame Rachel Whiteread is an English artist who primarily produces sculptures in cast form. Her work explores the imprints of human life on the objects and environments that define daily existence, transforming familiar interiors, objects, and surfaces into ghostly replicas. Through casting, she makes visible what is ordinarily unseen, shifting domestic objects and architectural spaces into solid forms that suggest permanence and memory.
Her work is held in major international collections including Tate, London; National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and Museum of Modern Art, New York. She was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in 2019.
