Biography

2016/ makes contemporary porcelain using the specialized skills of the pottery town of Arita, Japan. Local artistry is combined with international design talent in the making of desirable, everyday porcelain products. 2016/ aims to revive interest in and bring commerce back to this remarkable region's craft.

1616. Scattered fragments of pottery clay discovered by chance in the mountains of Arita in northwest Kyushu, came to be transformed into outstandingly beautiful porcelain, crafted for over 400 years. Even whilst facing the vagaries of history and the tastes of the age, the spirit of Arita’s people in their pursuit of crafting timeless ceramics has remained unflagging and has been inherited by the current generation sustaining Arita today.

2016. A year destined to be a turning point in the four centuries of Arita. 16 teams of prominent international designers was brought together to give creation to the new porcelain brand of 2016/.

It consists of two ranges; the "Edition series" handled by Creative Directors Teruhiro Yanagihara and Scholten&Baijings, and 15 other teams putting together the "Standard series". Collections combining the finest Japanese craftsmanship with the very best of global design.
