A cutting edge experimenter, Ron Arad’s work has been described by some as bold and frightening, due largely to its use of macho concrete and cut metal, tense sheets of tempered steel and guillotine edges.
Arad was born in Tel Aviv and studied at the Jerusalem Academy of Art and the Architectural Association in London. In 1989 he founded Arad Associates, an architecture and design firm in London, together with Caroline Thorman. He was also Head of the Design Products Department at the Royal College of Art from 1997 to 2009, and was made a Royal Academician in 2013. Arad’s career as a designer began with the Rover Chair, a postmodernist design that combines a car seat with a structural tubing frame.
